So, what do you as an LMSW in Texas need to know about becoming a clinical social worker? Let me guide you through the process of obtaining your clinical social work license.
To upgrade to a clinical, unrestricted license, you’ll need to do the following as outlined by Title 22, Part 34, Chapter 781 of the Texas Administrative Code
-
You must have a Master of Social Work (MSW) or a Doctor of Social Work (DSW) degree from a program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) to be an LCSW in TX
-
You must pass the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Clinical Level Examination for the state of Texas
-
You must complete 3,000 hours of supervised clinical social work experience after obtaining your master's degree. This must be done over a minimum period of 24 months and must include at least 100 hours of direct supervision with an LCSW-S.
-
The supervision should be conducted by a BHEC council-approved supervisor in Texas. Their credentials are LCSW-S. This is your Texas LCSW Supervisor (hopefully me!)
-
My rate is 180$ per month. You must also submit an application for licensure to the Texas State Board of Social Worker Examiners, along with the required fees.
-
Yes, you must undergo a criminal background check.
-
Pass the Texas Social Work Jurisprudence Exam, which covers state laws and rules affecting social work practice.
-
The LCSW-S and 100 hours of clinical supervision requirement is where I come in! I hold bi-weekly supervision groups virtually so that LMSW’s in Texas like you can meet the requirements to upgrade to your full, independent license. You can participate from anywhere in the state.
